Black Hills Affected Areas
An aerial survey of forest pests is conducted each year in the Black Hills to determine trends associated with local forest insects such as mountain pine beetle. This maps shows significantly more forest area has been impacted by mountain pine beetle supporting other evidence that mountain pine beetle numbers are increasing at an alarming rate.

Pine Beetle GeoPDF Map Project
The Pine Beetle GeoPDF Map is a joint venture between the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Fugro Horizons. The purpose of this GeoPDF Map is to show the extent of damage caused by the mountain pine beetle over the past six years. This map covers areas around the Needles region of Custer State Park including the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve and the Black Elk Wilderness Area.
